June 1st – National Trails Day
Title: National Trails Day Celebration in Grant County
Grant County, New Mexico, May 9, 2013: On June 1st, 2013, Grant County will be celebrating National Trails Day. There will be many events to celebrate this day, including hiking, mountain biking, talks and more.
National Trails Day will begin at 10 a.m. at the Dragonfly Trailhead, located at the corner of Arenas Valley Road and Elias Road in Arenas Valley. Representatives from the Forest Service will be guiding a 3-mile beginner hike. Participants are encouraged to bring comfortable shoes, water and hat. Martyn Pearson, of Gila Hike and Bike, will guide a 5-mile beginner mountain bike ride at 10:30am. There will be some bikes available on a first come first serve basis. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bike, water and helmet.
National Trails Day celebration will continue at noon in the Cobre Performing Arts Center, located at 1300 Tom Foy Blvd Bayard, NM 88023. Dr. Richard Kozoll, of Cuba, New Mexico, will present a Trails Talk: How to Enhance Individual, Family and Community Life. Dr. Kozoll provides leadership in Step Into Cuba, an ambitious program that created social support for walking and made Cuba more pedestrian-friendly by developing new walking paths and recreational trails. In addition, Dr. Kozoll participates in the Prescription Trails Program, in which doctors offer walking plans or “prescriptions” to patients.
Following Dr. Kozoll’s talk, there will be a free raffle, which will include restaurant gift cards, gift certificates to Gila Hike and Bike, a bike, a backpack, Cowboy coolers and more. Free snacks will also be provided. At the event, the Grant County Trails film will be premiered. The film, in collaboration with numerous community partners, will highlight five local trails, with stories from five local trail users, including Raul Turrieta, Jessa Tumposky, Eric Eng, Kelly Osuna and Dr. Joseph Shepard. Participants in Trails Day will receive a free Grant County Trails guide, a 48-page trail guide with many local trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to hard.
The National Trails Day celebration is made possible by a Community Enhancement Fund Grant and the Grant County Trails Group. For more information, please contact Andrew Lindlof at (575) 538-8078.
